Atelier 13 is a studio founded in 2007 in Istanbul by Asli Aydemir, head designer and master ceramicist. We went to visit her to better understand her original method of producing and decorating porcelain, which is inspired by woodcut techniques, i.e. printing with wooden blocks that have been engraved with patterns or figures. This technique has its origins in textile printing, silk in particular. Through experimentation and constant research on innovative methods of production and decoration, Asli has succeeded brilliantly in applying it to porcelain, creating exclusive and unique dinnerware entirely by hand.The studio is located on a small street in old Istanbul in a two-story house where Asli also offers ceramics courses. In addition to a few young but expert assistants, the shelves and worktables are also occupied by a number of cats who complete the Atelier 13 team. Dishes, cups, kitchen containers and other objects are produced through a process that involves creating molds, pouring the liquid porcelain in the molds, different methods of decoration, eventual glazing and finally, firing. It’s a process that requires a lot of time and specialized skill. And because each item is crafted individually, no two are ever exactly the same. Now let’s look at a video that shows how the dishes in our Foglia collection are produced using the wooden stamp method called the ‘Yazma technique’, since the decorations are symbols taken from the traditions of Anatolia, a fascinating region. Today we’re going to tell you about our recent visit to the Virginia Casa production facility in Tuscany, where we went to select the next collections to offer you. As always, we are greeted by Gabriele, one of the founding partners of the company. He tells us that Virginia Casa, regrettably, is one of the few firms to survive the invasion of industrial mass production. In this region, once rich with artisanal businesses, Virginia Casa is the only one that still makes handcrafted tableware, and much more. Entering the factory, we’re immediately struck by the orderliness of the stacks of plates and saucers that await their turn to be hand-decorated and fired. But what is even more striking is the familial atmosphere created by all the artisans working there. Right away we notice the Pesce and Regina collections so dear to us – and to you, too, we hope! – and ask for details on their manufacture. We start with the molds and the stamps that shape the many different objects. We pass through the kiln area, and what a kiln! It’s enormous and operates at extremely high temperatures of up to 1000°. “Here is the sprayer, which serves to correct eventual imperfections after the objects come out of the kiln”. This is the area of glaze application and quality control. We can’t contain our curiosity and ask how they get the vintage ‘antiqued’ effect that distinguishes many of the Virginia Casa collections, like Pietra . Gabriele takes us to another area. Leafs are turning gold, the weather is getting windy, and we finally get to wear our favorite scarfs and cozy sweaters. And that is the time we all know the fall season is HERE. We have waited for it for so long and these are the 4 REASONS to FALL IN LOVE with this beautiful time of the year even more: GOING OUT TO BRUNCHES All of us have special seasonal traditions that we carry in our hearts and one of mine is – Going Out to Brunches during the Fall. I cannot wait for this every year and it is definitely one of my favorite routines. First of all, the weather is perfect for it. It is neither hot or cold, it is just simply what we need. Second of all, is it so beautiful outside. Autumn brings these inspiring colors that make us feel so happy once we are walking along the streets.
